Brisbane Marketing has celebrated success at the 2009 Queensland Tourism Awards, taking out the top prize in the Visitor Information and Services category.

Recognised as the tourism industry’s most prestigious awards, this is the second consecutive win for the team at Brisbane Marketing’s Visitor Information and Booking Centre.

Brisbane Marketing Chief Executive Officer, Mr John Aitken said he was immensely proud of the team behind the Queen Street Mall-based Centre.

“In a tough economic climate, the Centre – which is mostly staffed by volunteers – was able to drive home some great results for the last financial year,” said Mr Aitken.

“In addition to managing around 2,000 enquiries per day, the Centre increased its sales revenue by more than 16%, expanded the Roving City Ambassadors Program of on-the-street tourist information and launched free guided Brisbane City walking tours.

“Brisbane Marketing is committed to positioning Brisbane as Australia’s new world city – as a place of innovation and creativity – and it’s great to see one of our own initiatives benchmarked as Queensland’s best.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about supporting the local tourism industry and having a positive social and economic impact on the local community.”

Around 900 people representing tourism organisations, government and business attended the awards ceremony held at Conrad Jupiters on the Gold Coast.

The 2009 Queensland Tourism Awards awards were hotly contest with more than 160 entries submitted from a range of businesses across the state.

The Brisbane Visitor Information and Booking Centre will now progress to the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards to be held in Hobart on 26 February 2010.
