services to get started

Getting the basics out of the way will help you settle in quickly.

banking

Australian currency is the only legal tender in Australia. There are 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins and $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes.

Your local currency can be exchanged at the airport on arrival or at most banks and major hotels. Traveller’s cheques are easier to use if already in Australian dollars but banks will cash traveller’s cheques from most currencies.

There are numerous banks in Brisbane, which are listed below. To open a bank account you will need to provide identification documents, such as your passport and proof of place of address.

It’s best to research the banks online to find out which one will best suit your needs

identification card

A Card 18+ (also known as an 18+ Card or a proof of age card) is available as evidence that you are legally able to enter licensed premises where alcohol is served.

The Card 18+ is an alternative if you don't have a passport or a driver licence demonstrating proof of age. It is also commonly used by people with a licence who, for security reasons, do not want other private information displayed as the Card 18+ does not include your address.
