Hallo Judith, so jetzt habe ich es endlich geschafft =) jetzt gehts weiter mit der Fragerei hehe. Arbeitest Du denn auch irgendwo half-time während Du studierst und kriegt man das gut hin neben dem Studium oder ist das schon ganz schön anstrengend?? Dann noch was zu dem Tourismusstudiengang auf der Griffith Uni: Mich würde interessieren ob das ziemlich theoretisch oder auch teilweise praktisch angelegt ist? Musst Du z.B. work experiences machen? Und das mit dem study abroad geht das auch problematisch im 5. Semster oder muss man da noch irgendwelche besonderen Bestimmungen erfüllen? Was sind denn noch gute Gründe an die Griffith Uni zu gehen? Ist der Campus auch so schön? =) Ach, jetzt fällt mir grad ein, wäre es Dir lieben, wenn ich hier auf Englisch schreibe? Hi Caro! Danke, das du hier schreibst!! Das hilft mir enorm! Also: Waehrend meinem ersten Jahr hab ich richtig Halbzeit gearbeitet, dann war ich ja auf Austausch (da hab ich Freiwillig gearbeitet weil ich kein Arbeitsvisum hatte) und jetzt hab ich eine Freiwilligenrolle bei Brisbane Marketing/Study Brisbane wo wir Internationalen Studenten helfen sich in Brisbane zurecht zufinden und hoffentlich hier studieren zu wollen. Was bezahlten Job angeht, im ersten jahr war es voll einfach was zu finden (weil das Visum da so lange gueltig war) aber im Moment finde ich es voll schwer weil die Arbeitgeber natuerlich sehen, dass mein Visum auslaueft und dann wollen die mich nicht antrainieren weil ich ja dann in kurzer Zeit schon wieder gehe. Ich denke aber mit generell Job finden gibt es kein Problem. Ich hab das mit dem Job immer gut hingekriegt neben der Uni aber ich denke es haengt davon ab wie schnell du lernen kannst und was du von Deutschland aus gewohnt bist. Ich jab ja z.B. eine Ausbildung und Abi parallel in Deutschland gemacht und auch wenn die Ausbildung mehr schulisch war, der Aufwand war doch enorm und jetzt hier kann ich mir besser meine eigene Zeit einteilen. Aber ich denke das wuerdest du auf jeden Fall packen!! Was den Studiengang angeht, ich hab gehoert, dass Griffith eher praktisch orientiert ist. Fuer Tourismus muss man 250 Studen arbeiten (neben dem Studium) um den bachelor zu kriegen. Allerdings gibt es auch oft von Professoren geleitete Praktika (dafuer musst du dann aber Studiengebuehren bezahlen). Der meiste teil ist aber theoretisch. Ich hab z.B. gerade ein Fach (room devision Management) da lernt man wie die Rezeption und so funktioniert. Da lernen wir z.B. ein Computerprogramm was auch wirklich im Gewerbe benutzt wird. Ich hab aber keine Ahnung leider wie das an anderen Unis hier ist. Mit Exchange/Study abroad, ja das geht ab dem dritten Semester. Ich wuerde es allerdings an deiner Stelle nicht im letzten Semester machen da wenn du ein Fach vom Austausch aus irgendwelchen Gruenden nicht angerechnet kriegts, dass du dann das Fach nachholen kannst damit du zur Graduation kannst. (Sorry, weiss das Wort gerade nicht in Deutsch :) Und du duerftest den Austausch nicht nach Deutschland machen aber sonst so ziemlich ueberall hin. Bestimmungen sind nur gute Noten (ueber 4 den GPA denke ich, d.h. alles bestehen) aber das musst du nochmal gucken. Und natuerlich Visums berechtigt sein und so. Also ich bin and ie Griffith weil ich nicht die "Elite" von der UQ wollte und wegen dem Preis und weil da recht viele Int. Studenten sind. Da Griffith auch so gut mit Tourismus ist waere das ja auch ein Grund. Aber ich denke da musst du selber wissen was du fuer eine Persoenlichkeit bist und ob du lieber UQ Mentalitaet hast oder Griffith. Versteh mich bitte nicht falsch, UQ ist eine PRIMA Uni, nur da ich da nie studiert habe kann ich voll schlecht einschaetzen wie da so das lernen ist, allerdings hab ich das mit der "Elite" schon mehrmals von Leuten gehoert die jetzt bei griffith sind und vorher bei UQ waren. Der Griffith Campus Nathan liegt mehr oder weniger in einem Stueck Wald und ist bei weitem nicht so impressive wie der von UQ aber trotzdem schoen finde ich. Der Gold Coast Campus ist glaube ich relativ nahe am Meer aber ich war noch nie richtig da, nur mal vorbeigefahren. Auf Deutsch ist schon ok, freut mich auch nochmal entwas Deutsch zu schreiben. Meine Rechtschreibung laesst naemlich zu wuenschen uebrig und mir fehlen manchmal die Deutschen Worte ;). Wie gesagt, wenn dir noch was einfaellt, ich helfe dir gerne. Jahr? Ist es auch einfach Jobs in Richtung Tourismus nebenbei zu bekommen, z.B. Reisebüro, ö.ä.? Also ich tendiere ja mittlerweile auch eher zu Griffith, auch wegen dem Preis natürlich ist das ein riiieeßiger Unterschied, ich bin echt erstaunt!! Wo wohnst Du denn da? Nah am Campus? Wie weit ist der Campus mit dem Bus vom CBD entfernt? Ach und dann nochwas zu den Klausuren: Sind die schwer, also haben die dort einen sehr hohen Anspruch oder erreicht man da schon mit ein bisschen lernen immer ne 4?? Das mit dem Austausch klingt auch gut =) Musstest Du da noch zusätzlich Studiengebühren zahlen, oder wie läuft das? Also, in meinem ersten Jahr war ich booking coordinator fuer eine kleinere Tour company hier in Bribane und hab bei wirtschaftlichen Exprienten an der Uni mitgemacht. Ich denke, wenn du an genuegend Tourguide companies/Reisebueros schreibst oder selber mal hingehst, solltes du da was finden. Ich wohne im moment in Southbank, voll nah am Fluss in einem Studentenwohnheim das Urbanest heisst. Wohnen ist hier leider auch voll teuer gerade da wo ich jetzt wohn, aber die Lage ist super! Hab vorher in uniresort in Mt Gravatt gewohnt und dort in der Naehe des Griffith Campus gibts noch einige andere schoenere Studentenwohnheime. die sind auch alle auf der Accommodation website der Griffith University. Am Campus wuerde ich eher nicht wohnen, weil das am Wochenende etwas schwierig ist da hin und weg zu kommen, besonders abends. Mit dem Bus sind es ca. 20-30 Min auf dem busway vom CBD zur Uni. Ich finde das geht. Was Klausuren angeht, da kommt es drauf an was du von Deutschland aus gewohnt bist. Ich finde so lange man auf dem Laufenden bleibt und die sachen liest die man lesen soll und so kann man gute Noten kriegen. Ich denke, wenn du nur zu den Vorlesungen gehst und den Tutes kannst du wahrscheinlich schon gerade so bestehen, aber ich glaube das haengt echt davon ab wie viel du fuer die Uni arbeitest und was fuer Noten du haben willst. Wegen dem Austausch, du bezahlt ganz normal deine Uni gebuehren hier und keine Gebuehren extra. Musst allerdings visum, flug, versicherung alles selber zahlen, ist ja eigentlich klar. Je nachdem wo du hingehen wuerdest, kann das ganz schon teuer werden aber Griffith vergibt kleine Stipendien fuer die die auf Austausch wollen. Musst natuerlich schon ein paar Sachen erfuellen (Noten und so) aber ich konnte immerhin meinen Flug und Versicherung damit bezahlen, was in den USA echt viel kostet. So, dir auch ein schoenes Wochenende! GLG. Judith

Auf meinem working holidays visa war es nämlich immer super schwer an solche reisebüro jobs etc ranzukommen, aber gut zu wissen, dass es mit ein bisschen eigeninitiative klappen kann auf dem study visa =) wieviel hast du denn da so verdient? Oh geil, Urbanest kenn ich auch, das ist doch relativ neu oder? von außen sah es echt gut aus als ich mal dran vorbei gefahren bin haha.. ich würde dann auch gerne so richtung south bank/west end ziehen =) mit der busanbindung zum natha campus ist das also kein problem von dort? Bist Du eigentlich auch in irgendwelchem Club an der Uni oder machst Du da Sport oder ähnliches? Wie sieht Deine Freizeit aus? Gehst Du oft weg? Das mit dem Austausch klingt echt super, bissel Zeit hätte ich ja noch haha aber gut zu wissen mit der förderung =)! Sag mal, machen eigentlich viele Deutsche ihren kompletten Bachelor dort oder sind das doch viel mehr study abroad?? So, jetzt noch was zu den Kursen: man hat ja 4 im semster oder? sind die schon relativ festgelegt beim bachelor oder hat man da noch wahlmöglichkeiten? bin noch nicht so 100pro bei der kurswahl auf der griffith seite durchgestiegen^^ auch würde mich interessieren wie das ist mit sprachen lernen? würde gerne noch spanisch machen. meinst du das lohnt sich? und werden die kurse dann von native speakern unterrichtet? so so, also mir fallen wirklich täglich neue fragen ein wie du siehst^^ aber sowas muss ja auch gut geplant und vorbereitet sein =) Also, viele Grüße nach Brissie! 30 Aug 2010 		HI! Also mit dem verdienen kommt denke ich drauf an wo du arbeitest, kannst aber generell so zwischen 10-25 dollar die stunde alles erwarten. Ich hab da aber jetzt nicht so die idee wie viel das im reisebuero ist. wegen Urbanest, ja das ist ziemlich neu und sieht auch von innen sehr gut und neu aus, aber manchmal haben die hier ein ziemlich schlechtes Management. die Lage ist allerdings aller erste sahne und total prima. wuerdest du denn nicht mit/bei deinem Freund wohnen? Mit dem Bus braucht man ca. 15-25 Minuten zum Nathan campus. Manche fahren direkt dahin, andere musst du am Griffith Busway umsteigen. Aber eigentlich kein Problem. An der Uni gibt es ein paar clubs, aber da weiss ich ehrlich gesagt nicht so richtig Bescheid. Was Sport aber angeht, ich hab eine 1 Jahr mitgliedschaft im gym am Nathan campus und die haben auch Yoga klassen und Aerobics und so die ich damit kostenlos mitmachen kann. ansonsten geht ich auch ab und zu gerne schwimmen oder joggen am Fluss. Oder kayakfahren oder reiten ... oder wandern. Da findest du bestimmt auch was fuer dich! Ich hoer an der Uni immer mal wieder Deutsch, aber doch eher selten, aber ich denke da sind noch so einige Deutsche. Die meisten aber wie gesagt nur fur ein Semester oder max ein Jahr nicht den ganzen Bachelor. Mit den 4 Kursen im Semester, da hast du 160 CP 16 Kurse vorgeschrieben und die anderen 8 kannst du frei waehlen. Wenn du allerdings nen zweiten Major haben willst oder nen Minor sind die dann doch wieder vorgeschrieben. Was Sprachen lernen angeht, ich hab 1 Jahr lang Spanisch an der Griffith gemacht. andere Sprachen die du machen kannst sind Japanisch, Chinesich, Koreanisch und Indonesisch glaub ich. Meine Profs kommen von allen moeglichen Laendern, die meisten allerdings von Asien. Die Tutors sind eher australisch aber auch manchmal aus China, Korea, Indien etc. Und mit dem Sprachen lernen, ich denke das lohnt sich immer! Allerdings sind die Sprachen Faecher anders als die Business und Tourism Faecher, irgendwie Highschool aehnlicher. Kleinere Klassen ganz besonders. LG zurueck nach Deutschland! Echt asiatische Profs? Wow. Die versteht man aber trotzdem gut oder? Ach, ich komme übrigens aus der Nähe von Wiesbaden und Du? Reist Du eigentlich auch zwischendrin immer mal rum, also in den Ferien? Hmm, ansonsten fällt mir grad nicht viel ein. Nehme heute mal an so einem Internet Workshop teil von Ranke Heinemann. 1 Sep 2010 		Hallo! Ne fuer nen zweiten Major brauchst du nicht laenger studieren als fuer nur einen major auch. allerdings, wie gesagt, dann hast du absolut 0 Wahlfaecher. Wenn du nen minor machst hast du 2 wahlfaecher, der rest ist vorgeschrieben. Mit asiatischen Profs ist zumindest an der Griffith ganz normal. Die Mehrheit meiner Profs ist aus Asian, allerdings sind manche von denen auch hier aufgewachsen glaube ich. Ich verstehe die gut aber im ersten Jahr, kann das evtl eine gewohnungssache sein. Wiesbaden ist garnicht sooo weit weg. Bin aus Wilnsdorf bei Siegen. Kennst du das? In meinen Ferien reise ich immer oder arbeite oder haenge einfach in Brisbane ab und relaxe. Meistens und immer wenns geht aber natuerlich reisen!!! Hatte uberhaupt keine Probleme hier anschluss zu finden, mir ist es allerdings auch erstaunlich leicht gefallen Deutschland hinter mir zu lassen. Wusste schon mit 17 das ich aus Deutschland weg muss :) Wie war der Ranke Heinemann workshop? LG! Judith

Hallo Judith, ich habe deinen Kontakt von Gordon Scott von Brisbane Marketing. Ich recherchiere gerade einen Artikel für Spiegel-Online zum Thema ausländische Studenten in Australien. Vielleicht könntest du mir auch ein Fragen dazu beantworten? Leider muss ich den Text schon am Montag abgeben - und ihn vorher natürlich auch noch schreiben. Wenn du mir so schnell wie möglich antworten könntest, wäre ich also sehr froh! Hier nun meine Fragen: - Wie alt bist du? - An welcher Uni studierst du was (in Deutschland und in Australien)? - Warum hat es dich nach Australien gezogen? - Gibt es kulturelle Unterschiede oder vielleicht sogar HIndernisse? Welche? - Wie überwindest du die? - Kennst den student guide "The Insider"? Was hältst du davon? Warum braucht es so etwas? - Du hast sicherlich auch schon von den Berichten über ausländische Studenten gehört, die in Australien angegriffen worden. Warum passiert so etwas? Müssen ausländische Studenten jetzt Angst haben? Hast du Angst? Wenn du mir ein paar Sätze dazu aufschreiben könntest, wäre ich sehr froh. Hallo Kim! Jetzt hab ich schon 2 mal probiert dir hier zu antworten aber immer wenn ich "reply" druecke ist meine Nachricht weg. Schon mal entschuldigung fuer das komische Vormat, es klappt nicht Absaetze zu machen. Also wegen deinen Fragen, ich bin 23 und studiere im letzten Semester an der Griffith University einen Bachelor of International Business mit Schwerpunkt International Tourism and Hotel Management. In Deutschland habe ich nie an einer Uni studiert und mache meinen ganzen Bachelor hier. Bevor ich nach Australien gekommen bin habe ich eine Ausbildung zur Kaufmaennischen assistentin fremdsprachen gemacht und dann noch Abi und waehrend der Ausbildung hab ich ein Praktikum in Neuseeland gemacht und mir hat dieser Teil der Welt dann so gut gefallen, dass ich hier gerne laenger wohnen wollte. Dann bin ich irgendwie auf Brisbane gestossen weil mein Flugzeug von Neuseeland hier Zwischenlandung hatte und ich den Strand voll mag und mir Brisbane sehr gruen und nett vorkam. Was kulturelle Unterschiede angeht, ich muss sagen ich glaube nicht, dass ich einen Kulturschock hatte als ich hier ankam. Ich finde die groessten Unterschiede sind aber, dass die Australier so offen und relaxed sind und man direkt mit jedem ins Gespraech kommt. Das wuerde so in Deutschland nie passieren. Australier sind auch sehr hilfsbereit und ich fand es schon immer einfach hier um Hilfe zu fragen und sie auch zu bekommen ohne Probleme. Manchmal musste ich allerdings mich selber ueberwinden zu fragen oder zu sagen wenn ich was nicht verstehe oder was nicht weiss. In der Hinsicht war ich oft mein eigenes Hinderniss, aber sobald man sich eingelebt hat legt sich das. Den Insider Guide finde ich super und hab sogar selber dran mitgeholfen. Ich finde er hat alle Infos (und viele echte Insider Infos) die man als Int. Student sonst erst wesentlich spaeter (vielleicht sogar nie wenn man nur ein Semester hier ist) rauskriegt. Der Insider hat gute Infos fuer Kontakte fuer alle Moeglichen Sachen: Freizeit, Nachhilfe, Miet- und Visa Sachen etc. Von Angriffen (koerperlich?) auf auslaendische Studenten hab ich noch nichts gehoert. Vielleicht liegt das allerdings auch daran, dass ich in Brisbane wohne und nicht Sydney oder Melbourne. Meiner Meinung nach ist Australien insgesamt sehr viel sicherer und besser organisiert als Deutschland und ich habe keine Angst im Dunkeln alleine durch die Stadt oder den Campus zu laufen. Ich hab allerdings vor kurzem in der Zeitung gelesen, dass einige Einheimische Studenten denken, dass wir ihnen die Studienplaetze wegnehmen. Das stimmt allerdings nicht und unsere Gelder werden fuer Lehrer, Lehrmittel etc benoetigt und nur die Gelder vom Staat wuerden nicht reichen. Daher sind vielleicht einige Australier den auslaendischen Studenten etwas voreingenommen manchmal. Was Fotos betrifft, ich kann gerne welche per Email schicken. Como estas. Encantada te ayudo, para eso estoy aquí. Mira encontrar trabajo en Australia no es tan fácil como era hace algunos anos y encontrar beca para los estudiantes latinoamericanos es realmente difícil ya que dan prioridad a países con mas dificultades económicas como los del Medio Oriente, Oceanía o África.

Estimada Aleyda : Mi nombre es Patricio Varas Karmy y le escribo desde Santiago de Chile. Te cuento que soy periodista y Master en Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE) de la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (España). Actualmente me desempeño como consultor independiente en las áreas de Comunicación y RSE, y también trabajo como docente universitario. Decidí escribirle porque en la actualidad estoy considerando la posibilidad de viajar a Australia en el primer semestre de 2011 para seguir estudios de inglés con fines académicos en la Universidad de Queensland. Posteriormente, me interesa postular a un programa de postgrado en el área de Comunicación y Desarrollo Social. Me gustaría tener su visión personal y profesional respecto de la experiencia de vivir, estudiar y trabajar en Brisbane y las ventajas de integrarse a la UQ. Si bien a través de Internet he revisado mucha información al respecto, creo que siempre es importante tener la opinión más cercana de alguien que está en la realidad cotidiana del lugar y el centro de estudios donde uno quiere estar. Hola Patricio: Ante todo disculpa la demora en responderte, pero el sistema tenía problemas y por alguna razón no me dejaba publicar el mensaje, pese a que lo escribí ya hace algunos días…. Me parecen muy buenos tus planes de venir a estudiar en la Universidad de Queensland, pues como tal vez sepas está clasificada dentro de las 50 mejores universidades del mundo. Como egresada de allá, te puedo decir que realmente que UQ ofrece todo lo que una universidad de talla mundial puede brindar. A propósito de tus estudios, cómo los vas a financiar? Los vas a pagar tu o vas a aplicar a alguna beca del gobierno Chileno? Te lo pregunto porque tengo entendido que Becas Chile está ofreciendo paquetes muy buenos para estudiar inglés y luego programas de posgrado en la universidad de Queensland que te pueden interesar. En cuanto a mi experiencia personal de vida en Brisbane pienso que ha sido la mejor! y estoy convencida que es una de las mejores decisiones que he tomado en mi vida. Yo llevo tres años y medio acá junto con mi esposo e hijita y no nos arrepentimos de habernos embarcado en esta aventura que para algunos podía parecer loca en algún momento.... Desde el momento en que llegamos a Brisbane podemos decir que nos sentimos realmente bienvenidos por los locales e integrados a la ciudad. Como estudiante, mi experiencia también ha sido inmejorable, pues ha superado mis expectativas. Además el hecho de tener la oportunidad de educarme en excelentes instituciones educativas, donde pude compartir e intercambiar puntos de vista y experiencias de vida con estudiantes provenientes de diferentes lugares del mundo, creo que eso es invaluable. En cuanto al aspecto laboral, gracias a Dios a mi esposo no le ha faltado el trabajo desde que llegamos y yo ahora que me gradué tuve la fortuna de vincularme profesionalmente en mi área en una excelente institución. Brisbane por su parte es una ciudad amigable y relajada, donde se aprende a disfrutar de la vida! También es una ciudad multicultural, moderna y cosmopolita, donde al mismo tiempo se preocupan por preservar las riquezas naturales. No dudo el porqué fue recientemente catalogada como una de las 10 mejores ciudades del mundo para vivir! incluso por encima de Sydney y Melbourne. Llevo 3 años viviendo acá junto con mi esposo y mi hijita quienes llegaron conmigo. Desde el momento en que llegamos nos hemos sentido bienvenidos por los locales e integrados a la comunidad. Como estudiante, la experiencia también ha sido la mejor. He estudiado en instituciones de alta calidad academica donde he tenido la oportunidad de intercambiar experiencias con estudiantes provenientes de muchas partes del mundo. Creo que eso es invaluable. En cuanto a la parte laboral, gracias a Dios también nos ha ido bien. Mi esposo ha estado trabajando desde el momento en que llegamos y yo ahora que me he graduado tuve la fortuna de empezar a trabajar profesionalmente en mi área. Realmente, estamos muy agradecidos con nuestra experiencia de vida acá. Brisbane es una ciudad muy amigable y relajada, donde realmente valoran el disfrutar la vida. También es una ciudad bastante multicultural, moderna y cosmopolita donde se preocupan al mismo tiempo por preservar la riqueza natural. Well something that you should definitively bring is translated copies of all important copies (your qualifications, work certificates, birth certificates) etc... since you never know when you are going to need them... In addition, do not forget to bring also enough clothes for winter since we have 3 months of very cold days. Another thing is a good camera to take cool photos. A lap top could be so useful to do your assignments and talk to your parents. What else... oh yes, if you drive, you can also bring your drivers licence also officially translated. I hope this helps! Hi Anna, if you want to read some local Brisbane news, you can often find that there's some free newspaper around in city showing what's the latest news in the city, the newspaper is called "Brisbane News" as I remembered ( I often read it as well :D ). As for website, I highly recommend http://www.visitbrisbane.com.au/Travel/Events . this website updates Brisbane latest news and events frequently. It would definitely keep you up to date to the Brissie! another website that is as good would be http://www.ourbrisbane.com/whats-on/events. this website also list all the events in Brisbane surrounding suburbs and different types of events. I believe you can easily find something you want there. :)

Hi Anna! I knew from the beginning that I didn't want to study in Sydney or Melbourne because this seamed like where everybody is going to. Also I heard that it is very expensive and hectic there. Brisbane just seemed like a good place for me as it is not too big but yet big enough to have lots of things to do. I also love the beach very much and the beaches close to Brisbane just seemed perfect. This is why I decided for Brisbane. Thanks for your question!

This is a difficult question to answer without knowing more details about your specific background, but suffice to say, Brisbane is a very hospitable, relaxed city where people thrive on inclusive social activities, so regardless of where you live, it is not hard to meet new people at all. For a first-time uni student (and/or a one-semester/one-year exchange student), it might be easier to live on-campus/pre-arranged housing initially for convenience (albeit at a price) and to make the transition easier... there's heaps of uni clubs and outside community activities that you can get involved in as well. Hello! Thanks for your question about living cost in Brisbane. Generally, living in Brisbane is rather affordable compared with other Australian cities. Generally, your living expense would depend a lot on your living style, expected type of accommodation and your recreation activities. Here are some of my draft costs for a week: - Living cost: for my experience, it costs around $120-$175 for a single room including electricity, internet, gas and water bills. Normally the room is partly/fully furnished but if you want to equip other things, it could cost more. It should be noted that if you decide to live near campus (or on campus), the rent would be much higher; however, it would save you the transport cost and commuting time to uni. - Transport cost: would be tentatively at $16; however, it’s up to where you live. If you live in the same zone with the uni (UQ is zone 2, for example), it’s cheaper than living in other zones. - Food: To me, it would cost around $60-$90. One could find that it might be a lot cheaper if she brings own lunch to uni and doesn’t eat out too much. - Study materials: Textbooks are around $120 each. The number of textbooks is required by your lecturers and your needs. Copying is around $5-$10/week. - Recreation: cinema is about $6-$13. Sport courses within UQ are around $70-$110 for 6 weeks. Hi Anna, I found that it is not hard to meet new people in Brisbane. There are some ways you can meet new people. I have met my friends from my school and work place. If you are a student, you can join any types of student clubs that you are interested in. The club members have similar interests so it is easy to start conversation with them and also you can join activities from the club as well. For example, I joined AIESEC at my university and I met lots of nice and cool people from other universities as well and it was very meaningful time for me. Also you can join any volunteering programs, if you are interested. Once you start meeting new people, you will build your social network. Your friends will introduce their friends and they introduce other friends. It may be hard to start meeting new people but new people will be your friends and they will be important part of your life.

There are two types of accommodation; on-campus, and off-campus. Living on campus is probably the safest, and the most active due to the number of recreational activities carried by the dormitories, or colleges as they are called here in Australia. However, this comes with a relatively hefty price. Off campus is slightly cheaper depending on the suburb and close it is from the CBD. If you are thinking of going to UQ then St. Lucia, Toowong, Indooroopilly, and Taringa would probably be the ideal suburbs for you to stay in. If you are thinking of going to Griffith, then Nathan, Mt. Gravatt, or Garden City are probably your best options. Often Universities have accommodation search engines on their website. Hi, well, there are live shows in Queen St Mall in front of Myer Centre from time to time. It's always free! You will find live music there if you sometimes walk by and it's usually great music! Also in King George Square in front of the City Hall, there is sometimes live music as well, but i think you need to pay for the ticket to watch it. Hope this helps.

Hi Anna, usually I spent three half-days in UQ every week, and some certain weekends I have another intensive course as well. Besides, this semester I just applied for a casual role in uni but still waiting for reply:) And every week I will regularly enjoy the gym exercises in UQ fitness center, with a lot of fun and sweat ha. Now I also need to take care of my dear roommate, who unfortunately springed her ankle seriously and has to stay in bed. Apart from these, catching up or meals with local friends are also wondeful parts of life for me. One thing coming is the cultural week in UQ, in which international students here will introduct their home countries to local students who prospectively like to exchange there. I will be one of the ambassaors as well!

Yes, of course I can get Chinese food from brisbane. There's a asian marketed called Yuen's Market locating at sunnybank, market square, it is the most popular and well-known one. There are also several others around that are, just let me know if you need more information about that. And there are also heaps of Chinese restaurants in market square too. But we don't go there too often since we mostly cook at home( it can save lots of my money), and we're kind of fed up with the food there, most of them is operated by Taiwanese and Hong Kongnese, it all tasted not much difference. We've explored some new typical restuarants where you can tast very special king of food from a certain part of mainland China, also, let me know if you need more info. Hi Senthil, May in Brisbane is considered Fall. Though nothing like the fall I am use to in Canada. On average the weather in May is in the mid to high 20's. Last year when I arrived I was still sporting my summer dresses, however I have to say I think I have somewhat acclimatized. I can now feel the little bite in the air which can be very refreshing after an Aussie summer. All in all the weather in Brisbane is fantastic and warm, boasting about 245 days of sunshine a year!

I have to say my favourite thing about Brisbane is there is always something to do. If you are looking for a quiet afternoon, you can stroll along the waterfront by Kangaroo Point or check out the Art Gallery. If you want to be around all the action, then head to Queen Street Mall. If it's shopping you fancy, then you can hit up almost every suburb and find the fashions of your desire. In essence, there is something for everyone in Brisbane, and most importantly something to satisfy each of your moods.

En el caso de Bolicia, no sabría decirte que institución se encarga de ello, pero debe ser la encargada del tema de los estudios en el exterior. Hola Aleyda... espero que estes bien... es la primera vez que te escribo asi que no se como es la dinamica y todo... pero segun vi en tu blog eres super buena gente y le respondes a todos muy bien y no t pones brava por las preguntas ni nada :-) asi que aqui voy y t cuento un poquito de mi situacion. Mi nombre es Andres Chaur, tengo 23 años y recien me gradue como comunicador social y periodista en la universidad del norte en Barranquilla. de experiencia laboral, hace un año que estoy vinculado con una emisora cultural, pero mi contrato expira en abril. ok... a lo que vamos. Desde hace tiempo vengo con la idea de emigrar!! la primera opcion fue Canada...ya que estuve un año viviendo y aprendiendo el ingles, por lo cual me considero que tengo un buen nivel, pero prefiero aventurarme, algo usual en mi, y hacer de Asutralia mi hogar. Despues de investigar y hablar con expertos en estos temas desidimos que lo mejor seria Brisbane, lo cual segun he visto potr la web no refuto la idea. pero una de las cosas q mas me llamo la atencion fue la Universidad de Queensland (UQ) wuaoo es hermosaa y detallando los planes academicos me parecen exelentes!!... asi que mi idea de ensueño seria... ir a estudiar en la UQ por unos 5 meses ingles para reforzarlo y tomar el IELTS para luego pasar a tomar un Bachelor of creative arts, para complementar lo q ya he estudiado o un Diploma o un Master... bueno el problema central... como casi siempre lo es.... DINERO!, mas de AUS $8000 por un semestre de diploma y más de AUS $ 19.000 por un año para el Bachelor. realmente el presupuesto se me sale de las manos... el curso de ingles completo y los primeros meses me lo van a costear mi familia... pero despues si me tocaria a mi... es decir TENGO q conseguir un trabajo...lo cual, segun veo no es tan imposible como aqui en Colombia, pero para pagarme un BA o un Diploma o Master realmente haciendo los calculos...es casi imposible... y si al cabo de la finalizacion de mi curso de 5 meses... no sigo estudiando o no tengo una propuesta formal de trabajo.. chao Australia....tengo entendido.... asi que Aleyda...¿como hiciste tu y los colombianos que han estudiado una carrera universitaria alla si en casi todas las universidades los precios oscilan por ese rango? cuentame como hicieron... una beca... son petroleros.... un super trabajo...??? Hola Andrés: Bueno pues no, ni somos petroleros, ni nos ganamos una beca, ni tenemos un super trabajo... En mi caso personal, lo que hice, que es lo que hacen la mayoría, es sacar un crédito con el ICETEX o Colfuturo e irlo pagando poco a poco desde acá con los ahorros del trabajito. Sacar el crédito en eI ICETEX no es complicado. Lo importante hasta donde recuerdo es tener uno o dos fiadores, uno de los cuales con finca raíz. Por otro lado, tengo entendido que Colombia firmó acuerdos con Queensland el año pasado en educación y otras áreas.Así que vale la pena estar muy pendiente este año de las becas que publica el ICETEX. Bueno por otra parte, debo comentarte que aunque en Australia es posible trabajar, conseguir trabajo no es tan a la fija como lo era hace un año y medio atrás. Después de la crisis económica, las cosas se complicaron y ya no está tan fáci. Y me refiero a cualquier tipo de trabajo. Sin embargo, no es imposible. Todo depende de muchos factores... Hay gente que consigue como otra que no, pero es bueno que lo sepas... Y encontrar trabajo en el área de uno siendo estudiante internacional, pues es realmente aún más complicado... Casos se han dado, pero normalmente en profesiones en las cuales hay alta demanda de profesionales como algunas de las ingenierías principalmente. Pero bueno, no hay nada imposible y la peor diligencia es la que no se hace.... De cualquier manera, creo que la experiencia de venir a estudiar a Australia y específicamente a Brisbane y a UQ vale la pena. Ojalá puedas conquistar tu sueño de estudiar en UQ como lo hice yo. Hi Emma, I am a big fan of walking and the city is very pedestrian friendly. If you don't have a car, fear not! You can get around on foot, by push bike or moped. And Brisbane also has a fantastic metro transit system with trains, buses and the citycatferry (another fav of mine). The city is definitely bike friendly - it has over 500km of bikeways, and our metro transits are also bike friendly. Bueno le escribi a la directora que ya me contesto y me dijo que me esparaba en enero. No le pregunte sobre el child care de cooparoo porque estube viendo que es mas caro la renta asi que decidimos con mi esposa que estaba bien por la otra zona ya que no es tan tan lejos que digamos y tienen un buen transporte publico que nos va a ayudar mucho. Bueno mi esposa tiene una prima lejana que esta viviendo eight mile plane pero vive con roomates asi que estoy pensando si llego alli, como voy a ir solo primero derepente llego a un hotel para no molestar. Por eso quiero tener algunos appoinmets para cuando llegue y asi tener my place lo mas rapido posible. gracias Aleida, como siempre ers una gran ayuda.

Ya decidimos que vamos a vivir por tu casa (Salisbury) ya que Naim mi hijo va a ir al daycare por alli, asi que si ves algo interesante por la zona o alrededores para poder alquilarlo que sea de 1 o 2 cuartos y bordee entre 200 o como maximo 300 por semana me avises ya que quiero comensar a alquilar para Febrero que es la fecha en que llega mi familia, yo voy a estar por alla alrededor del 15 de Enero para poder ubicarme y alquilar antes que mi familia llegue. Hello Dr. Manasi. Hope you are well. Its quite easy to find a good accomodation in Brisbane. you can look up www.realestate.com.au . This website has a lot of info about accomodation. When you look up the webpage, select the queensland region after that you can decide if you want a share accomodation or want to rent a place. You would a lot of choice to look from. Even after you arrive most of the unis in Brisbane have information board with regard to accomodation and available places. However, from personal experience i think is best to arrive and look around so that you can figure out the how the place is and copare it with other possible options. 2 Dec 2009 		Hi Dr Manasi, my name is Annur and I am studying in UQ and living near UQ. It's advisable for you to arrive in Brisbane at least 2-3 weeks before uni starts. Accomodation around St Lucia is very competitve. Though this said, don't keep your hopes down, just arrive early and have your paper documentations ready always (such as passport, bank statements, sponsor letter, visa, student card) have them printed out in few copies so it would easier for you to apply for units/hses. Like Sukhman advised, you can search online through rentalestate.com.au though it would be best for you to do that here, call for an inspection appointment and submit your rental application to the agents. OR you can go to Toowong, (suburb next to St Lucia) and collect a couple of rental lists from the rental agents offices (around Toowong village). Different agents require different sorts of documentation in order to achieve 100 points of identification. So you should read the application properly to check you have the right documentations with you. I would advise you to search of off-campus accomodation than on campus because on campus is usually very pricey. Lastly, you can search from UQ's website as well at http://accommodation.uq.edu.au/offcampus/accommodation/index.html and have more options to share with someone else. If still in doubts, when you arrive in Brisbane, you will attend a briefing with UQ's Student Acommodation and there you will be able to seek professional assistance in regards to tenants rights and options in St Lucia. i hope that helps Dr Mani. Soy Carlos R. de Perú, llevo más de 1 año ahorrando e investigando para irme a Brisbane, esta ciudad ya fue elegida hace mucho por lo que es. mi problema ahora es que no me decido entre elegir a Shafston o la escuela de inglés de la Universidad de Queensland, recurro a tu experiencia para resolver esto. Mi objetivo es aprender un buen nivel de inglés para una posterior MBA si se llega a dar en el futuro. si fuera así , mi elección sería fácil y elegiría simplemente la UQ, pero hay un factor que me hace dudar, y es que si me gustaría conseguir trabajo no llegando claro pero si rápidamente. por lo que me han comentado por allí que las clases en la UQ son de 9 am a 3 pm por lo que es difícil luego conseguir trabajo (es verdad?) pero hasta lo que sé todos los cursos de inglés de Shafston también son en las mañanas. Te agradecería que me aconsejes si mi prioridad es el inglés y luego también es importante el trabajo (Shafston está cerca a la City y también tiene un "club del trabajo") gracias sinceramente. Hola Carlos: Espero que te encuentres bien. Entiendo perfectamente lo díficil de tu decisión...ya que las dos opciones tienen sus ventajas y desventajas. Bueno, mira los dos lugares son excelentes. Yo personalmente conozco el nivel académico de la universidad de Queensland y te puedo decir que es de lo mejor. Por algo debe estar clasificada en el puesto 41 de las mejores universidades del mundo. Por otro lado, por lo que conozco y he escuchado de Shafston es que también es de los mejoresinstitutos de inglés de Brisbane. Así que cualquiera de los dos son muy buenas opciones. En cuanto al horario de clases en el día, es muy parecido. La diferencia es que Shafston ofrece cursos en la noche, pero si tu prioridad es estudiar inglés te recomiendo que estudies de día. En la tarde-noche también puedes encontrar trabajo. Las posibilidades son más limitadas, pero hay. Sin embargo, me parece bueno que Shafston ofrezca los dos horarios, pues puede ser una ventaja a la hora de tener que hacer un cambio. Ahora, que si la búsqueda de empleo es fundamental para ti, lo de la bolsa de empleo de Shafton puede ser un buen plus que hay que aprovechar, pues a veces encontrar trabajo no es tan fácil. Pero si la prioridad fuera hacer el MBA en la universidad de Queensland, sin duda te recomedaría que hicieras el inglés ahí mismo. De cualquier manera, cualquiera de las dos instuituciones te van a preparar muy bien. Si quieres información directa sobre Shafston, puedes preguntarle a los student ambassadors de Francia, Brasil y Japón creo, ya que ellos estudian ahí. Bueno, espero que esta información te sirva. Hi Laura, thank you for your question! I think that contacting your university's accommodation services is the best first step that you should take. If you don't go to university but go to a college or any other institution, they usually can give you some good advise. Other than that watch out for blackboard notes all around university/institutiton. I know of many international students who spend the first few nights in one of the backpacker places in Brisbane. I think this is quite a good approach since it doesn't cost too much. It is better to inspect places first and getting to know your future housemates rather than committing to a contract while you are still overseas. This is also why it is so important to get here at least 2 weeks before your classes commence. Living in college on campus is probably the most expensive alternative. I personally think that the lifestyles on and off campus are very different. It is important to note that in Australia, the majority of all units/houses are rented through real estate agents. It is very rare that you can rent places from private people. Usually you will have a 6 or 12 month lease. For a 2-bedroom-place, I think $250 - $270 is currently quite normal but of course this increases the closer you get to the campus and/or the closer you get towards the city centre. A good website is http://www.realestate.com.au. They also post vacancies for shared accommodation. Again, contact your university/college/institutiton and they will explain to you how it works in detail. Hope that helps :) Anja

Hi Arthur, that’s a very interesting question and I think everyone would give you a different advice. I personally prefer the end of winter/beginning of spring period in August and September because you have a lovely blue sky every day combined with the beautiful blossom of the flowers while the weather is not too warm and not too cold. In general the summer gets hot and humid with quite a lot of rain. The winter is very dry but beautiful with blue skies on a daily basis, temperatures can drop below 10C during the night but in their 20s during the day. Overall, I think every season has something unique on offer. If you love the ocean I think it doesn’t really matter what time of the year you are here. I sometimes hear the locals saying that swimming in the ocean in winter is too cold. But I guess that’s really up to you ;) However, if you are planning on travelling up north along the East Coast of Queensland towards Cairns, be aware that (1) the wet season is December until March which can see heavy daily rain the further you get towards the tropical areas up north; and (2) from November – May/June there are “Box Jellyfish” so called “Stingers” in the waters off the coast from about Agnes Waters in Queensland up north. Another good advise when you plan on travelling is to be aware of the school holidays in Australia (see: http://www.dest.gov.au/portfolio_department/calendar_dates/school_term_dates_2009.htm). Travelling and in particular accommodation during this time is much more expensive. I hope that helps a little :) Anja

Hey, Birna! Honestly I dont know how other places like to study except Brisbane but what I can tell you now is I have never regreted to come here. even no homesick for a second. The experiences for everyone would be different but sure you will enjoy being in Brisbane like me if you are well prepared in advance. Hmm about my favourite places,, I like parties and hanging out with my friends on weekends. So,, perhaps the valley or china town? That place is every interesting esecially friday and saturday night ;) anywyay, good luck and might see you in Brisbane sometime later!!!

Hi Birna, Thank you for your question. There are many many activities that are organized by the universities. You can join numerous different clubs & associations or you can even set up your own. Usually you will have the chance to get to know them within the first 2 weeks of semester, as the universities organize a special event for commencing students to familiarize themselves with all that is on offer. Apart from university it is quite easy to join other clubs and as you can see from the event calendars and posts on the Study Brisbane Facebook Site, there are many activities in and around Brisbane - mostly free of charge. If I can give you one piece of advise: do not overcommit in joining too many clubs/associations at the beginning of semester. That’s what happened to me. I was so excited that I joined 4 or 5 clubs but I never ended up going there because I realized that I had too much to do for my studies and also ran out of time because of my part-time work. As a normal week in Brisbane during semester, I must say that it is unfortunately not just a simple live near the beach. On average, you do 4 subjects per semester (this varies with the degree that you are doing). Each subject requires you to do about 10 hours of work per week in addition to your contact hours. On top of that, most of the students work part time. You are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours a week. Hence, a normal week during semester can be quite busy. However, please don’t let this discourage you. I promise you that student live in Brisbane is truly exciting and you will still have enough time to discover Brisbane and its surroundings. Just be aware that your commitments over here with studies/assignments and part-time work are most probably quite similar to the ones in your homecountry. Wishing you all the best, Anja

Hello Birma! Thank you for your question. That is very exciting you are coming here to Brisbane, you will love this city! It is an amazing place to live and study. In regards to computers, the university's here are very accomodating in the use of personal computers. A huge percentage of the students have their own laptops from home and have never had any problems using them on campus. The class rooms I used all had powerpoints available for plugging in your computer. If you ever have problems, the university staff are always willing to help but yes it is very common to have computers in class. I hope I have answered your question and good luck with your studies! Hi Birna. Good to know you are coming to study in Brisbane. Its quite centrally located and there are a lot of residential suburbs around the Uni which offer great accomodation. Also for more info on accomodation you can look up the Starting life tab here on the studybrisbane homepage. Yeah, on-campus accomodation is good as well i have a couple of friends staying on campusand they absolutely love the living environment there as well, though there's not much difference in terms of accomodation expenses. let me know if you need to know anything else
