Hi Vanessa, first of all great choice and welcome to Brisbane (in advance). A couple of things come to mind. 1st, I would suggest doing your research online for particular things you would like your apartment to have, that way you know what your looking for if you decide to come to Brisbane before renting. 2nd, research the prices of other apartments on other websites to see what a fair deal would be (I personally think $220 a week is ok as long as it includes everything that you want). 3rd, If you share with other people it might get a little cheaper for you. If you find a place out of the city but close to public transport that goes to UQ (for example 169 went from my place in eight mile plains to UQ - try http://translink.com.au/). 4th, I would personally wait until coming to Brisbane before I signed myself in to a contract and pay beforehand, I don't think there will be a shortage of homes. Hi Greg, thank you for your question! For me, I miss the Chinese food very much. Although there are some Chinese food for sales, they are still different from what I used to eat. In general, students can adapt the environment here easily because people here are willing to help others. If students are in troubles, there are always someone who they can ask for help from. In my opinion, the most difficult thing is the public transport because the system here is totally different from China. For example, some services are only provided in the peak hour during weekdays. Hi..Lubna.. Nice to hear from u…In the real sense of term, it depends on your interest where you feel comfortable in studies. But your study background shows that u you have B.Com so it would be better if u apply for Bachelors of commerce majoring in accounting, as you have done your honors, you might get exemptions in similar courses, so accounting is in fact cheap here as compared to other courses and is very affordable specially if u r applying for studies in Brisbane. But again, comparing the two different countries currency difference, than it is a bit expensive. I would say, you need atleast Rs. 1.5m(Pakistani) annually to afford your studies despite you do a part time job in Brisbane, Australia. And if you are applying for the cheaper institution or university that Griffith would be best comparing its affordability and global credibility in educational field. Hey...Fayaz..I am very glad to answer ur querries...Actually, It depends on ur living expense. Monthly Average expense is estimated as $1000, if u want to live in Brisbane than $1000/month wud be more than enough. Furthermore, U have different types of accommodations here, Shared accommodation wud be more cheaper. i.e. average $120/week without meal. However, ur weekly rent+Meal+transport, everything is included in the monthly average expense. i.e $1000. Brisbane is very cheap as compared to other cities in Australia. Your part time job is thoroughly dependent on your communication skills and your confidence. It won't be very hard to cope up if u r good in english speaking. For accommodation, you can reserve it online or through university support. So it is not a big problem. So feel free to ask any question further question if u have. Thanks

It really depends on what type of accommodation you are looking for, if you are interested in a student accommodation like The Pad or Uniresort, then it is better to arrange those prior to your arrival. Altertanatively, if you are looking at renting a flat or share house (like I have) then I definitely recommend you wait until you are in the city. I found it pretty easy to get a place when I arrived, I had a hostel booked for the first week, and as soon as I landed raided the rental sites and put the feet to the pavement and found a place in a matter of days. My tips would be: 1) research the different suburbs to find what fits you (assessability to Uni and city are important); 2) Check out the rental sites like http://www.realestate.com.au to see what is out there 3) if you are interested in places that are listed by realestate agents, try and get Pre-approved (fill out a general application with the neccessary documents) check out the realestate agent website to see what they require as each one is slightly different; 4) if you don't choose to get pre-approved get your documents ready to fill an application - these often include a copy of your VISA, passport, Birth Certificate - they are all on a point system - so try and gather as much as you can; 5) go to your inspections prepared with a completed application form, that way if your interested in a place (as in you like it when you see it) you can get your application in first - it always impresses the agents when you do; 5) also most leases are for 6months with the option to renew, that way if it turns out the place isn't what you want, you don't have to renew and always know that as a tenant you have rights http://www.rta.qld.gov.au

Hi Emma! I am so happy we decided to get a car; it just makes our weekend plans more flexible. You don’t have to coordinate metro transit (which is often a train and a few buses) to get to the coast, therefore drastically reducing your travel time. From our experience you can get a pretty decent car for pretty cheap. Unlike in Canada, cars are not exposed to erosion from salt in the winter and therefore they last longer and are often in better shape. Due to the high number of travelers to Australia, there are a lot of cars for sale that include registration. To purchase/renew registration is, off hand, a couple hundred, but this depends on the term you wish to register it for. The other expense you would have to pay for is insurance, all that is required is 3rd party liability insurance (though you can opt for higher coverage) which once again is based on the length of term, and can range from about $300-$600. Make sure the seller has completed a RWC (road worthy certificate), this ensures you can drive it away once purchased, otherwise you might be looking at some extra costs in fixing-up. I think getting an Australian license was the easiest thing! I walked into the DMV, filled out a form, had proof of address, showed my Canadian driver’s license, paid $40 for a 2-yr license and I was ready to drive!

Hi Alex. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I was trying to see if I could find any good contacts for you - unfortunately without success! I can understand the difficulty in trying to find a place to live without actually seeing it first hand. These are both good student accommodation options, and either one would be a great choice. My recommendation would be to determine what attributes/facilities you are looking for in an accommodation and then rate and compare. Also, if you are not 100% confident in your choice, choose a short lease term. That way you have an accommodation upon arrival, but you have the choice to extend your lease or opt for a new accommodation once the term expires. After a semester at school you might meet some mates and decide to rent a share house, so the short term lease would provide greater flexibility for the remainder of your course. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help! If there is anything else you are interested in knowing, please do not hesitate to ask!

En cuanto a tus dudas sobre elvalor del arriendo, realmente depende del sitio donde vayas a vivir. Recuerda entre más cerca a la ciudad o a la universidad más caro. Yo les aconcejo que miren en suburbios como Greenslopes, Anerley, Cooparoo, pues no están lejos, pero no son tan costosos como otros. Para que se den una idea de los precios pueden vsitar la siguiente página: http://www.realestate.com.au/rent Ahí seleccionas el estado y suburbio y te salen todas las opciones. Sin embargo, para que tengas una idea, nosotros por ejemplo estamos en una casa de tres habitaciones y pagamos 340 a la semana. Sin embargo, compartimos la casa con una otra persona que tiene una habitación y así nos sale más económico. Es una buena opción si quieren que les salga más económico y están dispuestos a compartir. En cuanto a buenos colegios en el área la verdad no estoy muy buen informada, pues vivo un poco retirada de la universidad. Sin embargo, estoy segura que UQ te puede asesorar al respecto. My best advice would be for you to talk to as many local and international students (not staff) as possible in order to gain an honest insight into the program; perhaps start by looking over the Film School's Facebook page and contacting people there -- http://www.facebook.com/Griffith.Film.School Besides just applying, it would be helpful to explore various websites like http://studybrisbane.com.au and http://wikitravel.org/en/Brisbane to virtually "explore" Brisbane; there is also a new Insider's Guide written by local international students (including myself) that is a useful resource for both newcomers and old! You can find it here -- http://www.studybrisbane.com.au/Study/About/eView.aspx or here http://www.studybrisbane.com.au/Study/About/Download.aspx (under publications). Rest assured, Australia is a lot like America in many respects so don't be too concerned about adjustment issues -- just be cognizant that everything is on a different pace/standard here (i.e. it is very relaxed, sometimes to a fault), so try to be patient but don't be afraid to be assertive. That said, Brisbane is lively and heaps of fun, so surely it will make up for any shortcomings that your studies may have.

Así que no te preocupes. En cuanto a tu esposo, pues bueno la verdad no sé que tan fácil le sea practicar su profesión. Eso depende de muchso factores: que tanto se mueva él, suerte, etc... Sin embargo, creería que hay varios trabajos relacionados que podrúia explorar a la par como cuidador de perros (es un servicio que él miso podría ofrecer con voalntes en los barrios de clase alta), estilista de perros, etc... Con respecto a la homologación, no sé tampoco que tan fácil sea, pero pueden averiguar en la página de Australasian Veterinary Council: www.avbc.asn.au En cuanto a tu doctorado, me parece muy bueno. Como sabes la Universidad de Queensland está entre las mejores del mundo, así que es una muy buena opción de la cual no te arrepentirás.He escuchado del programa de Becas Chile y sé de varios Chilenos que hay llegado a la universidad a través de él. Hi Caro! Danke, das du hier schreibst!! Das hilft mir enorm! Also: Waehrend meinem ersten Jahr hab ich richtig Halbzeit gearbeitet, dann war ich ja auf Austausch (da hab ich Freiwillig gearbeitet weil ich kein Arbeitsvisum hatte) und jetzt hab ich eine Freiwilligenrolle bei Brisbane Marketing/Study Brisbane wo wir Internationalen Studenten helfen sich in Brisbane zurecht zufinden und hoffentlich hier studieren zu wollen. Was bezahlten Job angeht, im ersten jahr war es voll einfach was zu finden (weil das Visum da so lange gueltig war) aber im Moment finde ich es voll schwer weil die Arbeitgeber natuerlich sehen, dass mein Visum auslaueft und dann wollen die mich nicht antrainieren weil ich ja dann in kurzer Zeit schon wieder gehe. Ich denke aber mit generell Job finden gibt es kein Problem. Ich hab das mit dem Job immer gut hingekriegt neben der Uni aber ich denke es haengt davon ab wie schnell du lernen kannst und was du von Deutschland aus gewohnt bist. Ich jab ja z.B. eine Ausbildung und Abi parallel in Deutschland gemacht und auch wenn die Ausbildung mehr schulisch war, der Aufwand war doch enorm und jetzt hier kann ich mir besser meine eigene Zeit einteilen. Aber ich denke das wuerdest du auf jeden Fall packen!! Was den Studiengang angeht, ich hab gehoert, dass Griffith eher praktisch orientiert ist. Fuer Tourismus muss man 250 Studen arbeiten (neben dem Studium) um den bachelor zu kriegen. Allerdings gibt es auch oft von Professoren geleitete Praktika (dafuer musst du dann aber Studiengebuehren bezahlen). Der meiste teil ist aber theoretisch. Ich hab z.B. gerade ein Fach (room devision Management) da lernt man wie die Rezeption und so funktioniert. Da lernen wir z.B. ein Computerprogramm was auch wirklich im Gewerbe benutzt wird. Ich hab aber keine Ahnung leider wie das an anderen Unis hier ist. Mit Exchange/Study abroad, ja das geht ab dem dritten Semester. Ich wuerde es allerdings an deiner Stelle nicht im letzten Semester machen da wenn du ein Fach vom Austausch aus irgendwelchen Gruenden nicht angerechnet kriegts, dass du dann das Fach nachholen kannst damit du zur Graduation kannst. (Sorry, weiss das Wort gerade nicht in Deutsch :) Und du duerftest den Austausch nicht nach Deutschland machen aber sonst so ziemlich ueberall hin. Bestimmungen sind nur gute Noten (ueber 4 den GPA denke ich, d.h. alles bestehen) aber das musst du nochmal gucken. Und natuerlich Visums berechtigt sein und so. Also ich bin and ie Griffith weil ich nicht die "Elite" von der UQ wollte und wegen dem Preis und weil da recht viele Int. Studenten sind. Da Griffith auch so gut mit Tourismus ist waere das ja auch ein Grund. Aber ich denke da musst du selber wissen was du fuer eine Persoenlichkeit bist und ob du lieber UQ Mentalitaet hast oder Griffith. Versteh mich bitte nicht falsch, UQ ist eine PRIMA Uni, nur da ich da nie studiert habe kann ich voll schlecht einschaetzen wie da so das lernen ist, allerdings hab ich das mit der "Elite" schon mehrmals von Leuten gehoert die jetzt bei griffith sind und vorher bei UQ waren. Der Griffith Campus Nathan liegt mehr oder weniger in einem Stueck Wald und ist bei weitem nicht so impressive wie der von UQ aber trotzdem schoen finde ich. Der Gold Coast Campus ist glaube ich relativ nahe am Meer aber ich war noch nie richtig da, nur mal vorbeigefahren. Auf Deutsch ist schon ok, freut mich auch nochmal entwas Deutsch zu schreiben. Meine Rechtschreibung laesst naemlich zu wuenschen uebrig und mir fehlen manchmal die Deutschen Worte ;). Wie gesagt, wenn dir noch was einfaellt, ich helfe dir gerne. Mira encontrar trabajo en Australia no es tan fácil como era hace algunos anos y encontrar beca para los estudiantes latinoamericanos es realmente difícil ya que dan prioridad a países con mas dificultades económicas como los del Medio Oriente, Oceanía o África.

Hola Lucy: Ante todo discúlpame por la demora en mi respuesta, pero he tenido dificualtades técnicas con la página y no me permitía contestar, pero al parecer ya ha sido solucionado. Me alegraque estés contemplando la opción de venir a estudiar a Australia. este es un país muy bonito y considero 100% que vale la pena venir. En cuanto a la crisis económica, pues no te puedo mentir diciéndote que no afectó la oferta laboral en Australia. eso realmente sería una mentira. Sin embargo, Australia es un país muy estable y fuerte económicamente así que creo que no fue tan fuerte como en otras partes. Desde el año pasado, las cosas han empezado a normalizarse de nuevo, pero no te puedo decir que conseguir trabajo sea muy fácil. Por otro lado en cuanto a lo de las habitaciones, sí hay varias formas de hacerlo: una es que te metas a un grupo que se llama Colombianos en Brisbane. No sé de que nacionalidad seas, pero eso realmente no importa. El grupo tiene más de 1000 miembros y están constantemente enviando mensajes sobre habitaciones disponibles. La otra opción es buscar en la página: http://www.realestate.com.au Alli escoges el estado, ciudad, le das laopción de arrendamiento y escoges la opción de una habitación. Ya ahí te salen todas las posibilidades con toda la información. Tienes que meterte a Google maps para ver que tan cercanas o lejanas quedan de la ciudad. No olvides que entre más cerca a la ciudad o las universidades más caro, pero entre más lejos el transporte también sube pues se cobra por distancia. Realmente el tema del lugar sólo lo puedes definir una vez sepas donde vas a estudiar.En cuanto a institutos de inglés, pues hay muchos. Realemente depende de lo que quieras y de tu presupuesto.Por ahora te puedo decir que lo mejor es estudiar en una universidad: entre ellas están UQ (la mejor), QUT y Griffith. Obviamente, lo mejor es lo más caro. Sin embargo, tienen descuentos especiales para latinoamerica. También hay institos muy buenos como el Tafe, Shafston y Langsports entre otros. Me parecen muy buenos tus planes de venir a estudiar en la Universidad de Queensland, pues como tal vez sepas está clasificada dentro de las 50 mejores universidades del mundo. Como egresada de allá, te puedo decir que realmente que UQ ofrece todo lo que una universidad de talla mundial puede brindar. A propósito de tus estudios, cómo los vas a financiar? Los vas a pagar tu o vas a aplicar a alguna beca del gobierno Chileno? Te lo pregunto porque tengo entendido que Becas Chile está ofreciendo paquetes muy buenos para estudiar inglés y luego programas de posgrado en la universidad de Queensland que te pueden interesar. En cuanto a mi experiencia personal de vida en Brisbane pienso que ha sido la mejor! y estoy convencida que es una de las mejores decisiones que he tomado en mi vida. Yo llevo tres años y medio acá junto con mi esposo e hijita y no nos arrepentimos de habernos embarcado en esta aventura que para algunos podía parecer loca en algún momento.... Desde el momento en que llegamos a Brisbane podemos decir que nos sentimos realmente bienvenidos por los locales e integrados a la ciudad. Como estudiante, mi experiencia también ha sido inmejorable, pues ha superado mis expectativas. Además el hecho de tener la oportunidad de educarme en excelentes instituciones educativas, donde pude compartir e intercambiar puntos de vista y experiencias de vida con estudiantes provenientes de diferentes lugares del mundo, creo que eso es invaluable. En cuanto al aspecto laboral, gracias a Dios a mi esposo no le ha faltado el trabajo desde que llegamos y yo ahora que me gradué tuve la fortuna de vincularme profesionalmente en mi área en una excelente institución. Brisbane por su parte es una ciudad amigable y relajada, donde se aprende a disfrutar de la vida! También es una ciudad multicultural, moderna y cosmopolita, donde al mismo tiempo se preocupan por preservar las riquezas naturales. No dudo el porqué fue recientemente catalogada como una de las 10 mejores ciudades del mundo para vivir! incluso por encima de Sydney y Melbourne. Definitivamente, creemos que escogimos la ciudad adecuada. Además que el costo de vida no es tan elevado como el de otras grandes ciudades de Australia. In addition, do not forget to bring also enough clothes for winter since we have 3 months of very cold days. Another thing is a good camera to take cool photos. A lap top could be so useful to do your assignments and talk to your parents. What else... oh yes, if you drive, you can also bring your drivers licence also officially translated. I hope this helps! Hi Anna, if you want to read some local Brisbane news, you can often find that there's some free newspaper around in city showing what's the latest news in the city, the newspaper is called "Brisbane News" as I remembered ( I often read it as well :D ). As for website, I highly recommend http://www.visitbrisbane.com.au/Travel/Events . this website updates Brisbane latest news and events frequently. It would definitely keep you up to date to the Brissie! another website that is as good would be http://www.ourbrisbane.com/whats-on/events. this website also list all the events in Brisbane surrounding suburbs and different types of events. Hi Anna! I knew from the beginning that I didn't want to study in Sydney or Melbourne because this seamed like where everybody is going to. Also I heard that it is very expensive and hectic there. Brisbane just seemed like a good place for me as it is not too big but yet big enough to have lots of things to do.
